IT’S EASY to get excited about anything Neill Blomkamp has in the pipeline. His particular brand of science fiction—dystopian, highly speculative, hardware-infused, and yet deeply human—has been a consistent grabber for nearly a decade now, and shows no signs of slowing down thanks to this week’s spectacular unveiling of the filmmaker’s latest endeavor, Oats Studios.
Set-up as a vehicle for the creation and online distribution of short films, the new venture teases a dark future where humanity is forced to share space with brutal alien invaders. Visually, tonally, and conceptually it’s Blomkamp all the way, right down to the animal-like appearance of the aliens (a la District 9‘s “prawns”).
Reportedly, much of the studio’s output will be available free for streaming, with some select content to be sold through the gaming platform Steam. It’s also been reported that the short films will eventually spawn feature-length movies.
You can sign-up to receive more information about Oats on the studio’s official website. But before you go, here’s the trailer that was released this week. Watch carefully and you’ll spot some familiar faces.
