How to Make Your Own Dollar Store COUSIN ITT for Halloween

As Gomez Addams would say, “Capital idea!”


WHILE SEARCHING around for the latest innovations in Halloween decoration, I stumbled into quite a few small, hairy gentlemen wearing hats and sunglasses. Not actual people, mind you, but homemade tributes to one of the most iconic characters from a franchise that’s wall-to-wall with iconic characters: The Addams Family.

I’m talking, of course, about Cousin Itt, the unintelligible walking carpet dreamed-up by cartoonist Charles Addams and made famous in print, television, and movies. He’s the weird relative we all wish we had. But short of that we can make a Cousin Itt of our own with a few inexpensive materials commonly found in thrift or dollar stores. It’s the perfect prop to place on your porch at Halloween as a greeter. Kids love him. And how elaborate you get with the character is up to you. Personally, I think some gloves might be a nice touch since Itt did display gloved hands on occassion, but the basic design seen here is certainly enough to make the point.

As a lifelong fan of all things Addams I’m happy to see that people are still into this character. If you include yourself among that number, and you’d like to take a crack at creating a Cousin Itt of your own, here are three sites where you can find helpful tips and instructions:

The prop featured here and at the top is made from things like chicken wire and grass skirts from a dollar store. But there are a number of ways you can go about creating yours.
