PIXAR, the studio behind such blockbuster favorites as Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and Up, is now offering a series of interactive lessons on the filmmaking process that’s open to everybody and completely free of charge!
It’s called Pixar in a Box, and it’s hosted by the free online learning resource, Khan Academy.
The full course covers all key aspects of animated film creation, from technical to artistic. Lessons include The Art of Storytelling (highly recommended!); Virtual Cameras; Animation; Staging; Color Science; and more. Each lesson includes both Theory, presented in the form of videos hosted by Pixar professionals, and Practice, via self-guided exercises and interactive tools that allow you to create animations right on the site. There’s also a comments section at the end of each lesson where you can compare notes with other learners and even get feedback from course authors.
There are also free education guides available for teachers who’d like to try these lessons in the classroom.
I’ve sampled several of the lessons and found them to be fun and instructive. The Storytelling exercise, in particular, is a valuable tool for writers.
